Cervical Disc Replacement Surgery

Cervical Disc Replacement Surgery

Overview

Cervical disc replacement is a motion-preserving spine surgery in which a damaged or degenerated disc in the neck is removed and replaced with an artificial disc. Unlike spinal fusion, disc replacement maintains more natural neck movement and reduces stress on adjacent levels of the spine. It is a modern alternative for patients with cervical disc disease.

Indications

Cervical disc replacement may be recommended for patients who have:

  • One or two levels of cervical disc degeneration
  • Radiculopathy (pinched nerve) causing neck, shoulder, or arm pain
  • Spinal cord compression due to herniated or collapsed discs
  • Failed conservative treatments such as physical therapy, medications, or injections

Procedure

Cervical disc replacement is typically performed under general anesthesia and involves:

  • A small incision in the front of the neck
  • Removal of the damaged disc and decompression of nerve roots or spinal cord
  • Placement of a metal and polymer artificial disc between the vertebrae
  • Closure of the incision and a brief observation period before discharge

Risks & Considerations

While generally safe, cervical disc replacement carries some risks:

  • Infection or bleeding
  • Hoarseness or difficulty swallowing (usually temporary)
  • Nerve injury or spinal cord damage (rare)
  • Implant dislocation or wear over time
  • Not all patients are candidates (e.g., significant arthritis or spinal instability)

Recovery & Outcomes

  • Many patients go home the same day or the day after surgery
  • Return to light activities is typically possible within 2–4 weeks
  • Full recovery and return to work often occur in 6–8 weeks
  • Studies show excellent long-term outcomes with preserved motion and reduced need for adjacent segment surgery
